Introduction to the Deity
Zhong Kui is a highly recognizable figure in Chinese folk and Taoist culture, known for warding off evil and protecting homes. His story became widely circulated after the Tang and Song dynasties, giving rise to rich traditions in painting, New Year prints, and seasonal customs.
Iconography and Work
Curling beard, fierce eyes, official hat, and sword are common elements; some works also incorporate bats and other symbols of “fu” (good fortune).
This piece was re-composed by Daoist priest Zhijian based on traditional iconographic elements, and hand-painted one by one in the gongbi heavy-color style. It uses natural mineral pigments, with hand-applied gold detailing to finish the headdress, garment patterns, ritual implements, and local details, so each piece will naturally vary in linework, color, and gold texture.
Production Process
Outline sketch → layered color application → refined detailing → hand-applied gold finishing. Not printed, transferred, or mass-produced.
Consecration and Shipping
After completion, the work is sent to a partner Taoist temple for 30 days of enshrinement, then protective packaging is applied before shipment. Because each piece is hand-painted individually, production time and scheduling will vary depending on the complexity of the work and current order volume.
Wearing and Display
It may be worn or displayed according to personal faith practices, and can also be collected as a small-scale traditional Chinese deity artwork. Avoid prolonged soaking, high humidity, and direct contact with alcohol or chemical cleaners on the painted surface.
