☯️🖌️【Shuilu Gongbi Heavy-Color Painting · Traditional Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Technique and Meaning】
Shuilu painting originated in ancient Taoist-Buddhist deity paintings offered for blessings during setting up fasting rites and holding Shuilu rituals, and is praised as “the highest hall of ancient Eastern religious fine-line art.”
The making of the Tao plaque fully inherits the extremely intricate process of traditional Shuilu gongbi heavy-color painting:
1. According to the ritual form (design): Based on Taoist classics and iconographic rites, the shape and appearance of the immortal are precisely customized.
2. Iron-wire outlining (linework): Using an ultra-fine brush dipped in ink, the wrist is steady and the brush is controlled with care, creating lines like spring silkworms spinning silk or iron strokes with silver hooks.
3. Three alum, nine layers of dyeing (coloring): Natural mineral pigments are used to layer and blend colors repeatedly. After more than ten coloring steps, a solemn, stable, and richly substantial foundation is achieved.
4. Gold-leaf opening of light (finishing the eyes and gold outlining): Pure gold powder is used to outline implements, crowns, and the divine radiance of the icon, with the final cinnabar touch to the eyes, endowing the image with majesty and spiritual vitality.
From blank silk and paper to design, sketching, linework, shading, and the final gold-leaf signature, the entire process is hand-painted with reverence. This is not only a portable protective talisman with powerful spiritual presence, but also a treasured Eastern art piece that blends millennia of Taoist essence with the mastery of traditional gongbi heavy-color painting.
